I miss feeling like I could get my head around the whole thing.

Not every computer. Not the entire internet. Just the system in front of me: what it was doing, why it was doing it, and where to start poking when it broke.

BBSs and IRC are tangled up in that feeling. Not because everything was better then. There was plenty of bullshit then, too. But learning your way around felt possible. You could spend time with a system and gradually make it yours.

That’s the part I want back.
